Nativity play

As a nice Sunday activity we decided to decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments. All went fairly well until the kids discovered the stuffed nativity set in the same box as some of the ornaments. My mom made this wonderful “huggable nativity” so that the kids would have something christmasy to play with and carry around. In theory this helps them leave the porcelain nativity set alone. The kids love the huggable nativity. They love it so much that they abandoned the tree decorating project in favor of playing with it. As I put the last few ornaments on the tree it was really hard not to laugh out loud while listening to their game. There is something so wrong about the wise men and the angel getting into a fist fight because the wise men have decided to turn to the dark side.

  1. Thank you, this image totally made my day. (“And the angel picks up a burning bush and smites them, saying, ‘Your light sabers are no match for the forces of good!'” Oh, wait, I’m mixing up my Testaments.) Let us know what happens to the sheep.

  2. Excuse me while I get serious:

I don’t know. The theology isn’t perfect, but the basics aren’t too bad. They know that men have the free-will to choose between good and evil, and that the forces of good must actively oppose evil. Things (I think) that even an atheist like me and a believer like you can agree on.

  3. Wise Men

Who is to say how many Wise Men saw the signs and some didn’t believe and some didn’t have the courage to travel west, following the star? Who is to say that all wise men who started out made it without sucumbing to temptation along the way and trading their gifts for other things of less value? All the Bible records is that Wise Men made it (and we assume there were three because there were three gifts given) and gave their gifts.
Wise Men have free agency and angels are supposed to be good. So their play was type cast.
I’m not worried. I know that the whole story will be straightened out by Christmas.

Now why is it that the Wise Men have all the fun?
As we have allowed our children to tell the story, Those “Wise Guys” found the baby Jesus and they “Parked their camels” outside the stable and they gave gifts of “gold, Frankenstein and myrhh”. Now they are engaged in the battle between good and evil. I predict they’ll turn back to the light side before Christmas!
