Just a day

Today was another sorting day. I’ve completed sorts 1-5 for the sketched editions. Sort six is the most tedious. I’ll try to get started on it tomorrow. But I can’t start working right away because I’ve volunteered to help in Link’s and Gleek’s classes for 30 minutes each. I haven’t done any volunteering at the school for two years. This year I’m not insanely busy and I’ve noticed that I’m not as well informed about my kids’ lives at school when I’m not there regularly, so back to the trenches I go. I may even talk to Patch’s teacher and see if I can volunteer in there as well, but kindergarten is usually well covered so there may not be space.

Kindergarten may be well covered for the volunteers the teacher wants to handle the regular schedule but what about special volunteering? When my oldest child was in kindergarten, the teacher wanted volunteers to teach small groups twice a week, preparing their lesson from materials she provided. If you couldn’t come in, you needed to get your own substitute and you couldn’t bring younger children with you. I had 2 preschoolers at home and a baby on the way. My solution was to ask her if she wanted someone to come in on Fridays and tell stories. She accepted and I was in! The piece of serependipity was that it was the beginning of something wonderful! After telling stories as a volunteer for 20 years, I became a professional storyteller! So look at what you have to offer and go for it! (Maybe you could take Hold On to Your Horses into the classroom and talk about the writing process.)
