Today my kids all had money burning holes in their pockets. Barnes & Noble lured us in to the store with a summer reading program and we departed with four purchases. It concerns me a little that my kids all seemed to feel that it was constitutionally wrong to walk out of the store without spending money. It makes me very very glad that they’re all so willing to pool their money to make sure everyone got what they wanted. In all it was a good outing although I could have done with fewer toys in the bookstore and some lower prices.

Are there used bookstores around that you could visit for a lower price? What about doing an “outing” (or maybe it should be an “ining”) with them to BN.com or Amazon to save money? Then they could have the fun of anticipating the arrival of their purchases.

Your kids got together and shared their money to allow everyone to be happy? Wow! Regardless of the worth of their purchases, that’s really cool to see. We are working so hard with our daughter to have her grow up generous.

Well, isn’t that a good thing? Doesn’t it mean that they know what stores are for and aren’t going to go unless they need to buy something? My kids know that we don’t go out to stores unless we need something. When we go shopping for distraction/cold it’s to the library.

Be happy that they wanted books, they last longer and more repeat value than the toy of the moment.

I’ll have to check for local used book sellers and scout them out to see if they’re appropriate for young children. I know Kiki would love it, but I’d probably just end up chasing Gleek and Patches down the aisles.
The sharing of money isn’t something I’ve taught them, it is just something that they have always done. It amazes me regularly how willing they are to share abundance. They’re less willing to share something that is scarce.

I don’t think that’s too concerning as long as they’re showing good money management skills in other respects. At their age, going to the store is still an outing (rather than a chore). They wouldn’t go to the beach and leave without swimming. Why would they go to a store and leave without making a purchase?
