The next day

Today was better.

A mouse obligingly died in one of the traps. But I still hear skittering, so there are more mice for me to catch.

My new computer arrived. I’ve got most of my settings and files moved over with a few critical gaps. I may have to bite the bullet and upgrade Quicken and Quickbooks. Software that is 5 or 6 years old starts being unsupported.

Kiki and Gleek ran off with Howard for a daddy/daughter campout. It has been a nice quiet evening with half as many kids around. I intended to spend most of it with the boys, but lots of it went into computer stuff. I did help them make smores in the microwave though. Hopefully that was enough to help them be happy about not getting to camp.

The big grumpiness from me continued today. Not sure why I’m so grouchy. Could be that Howard has been so incredibly busy. Could be me needing more breaks from the kids. Could be the huge messes that I find every time I turn around. Just this last week I found that some kids had made bird’s nests out of cut grass in the middle of a bedroom floor. The dried grass was then kicked all over the room and mixed with dirty clothes, clean clothes, books, yarn, toys, more yarn, and some TV tables. It was a truly amazing mess.

Of course some of the over-powering mess is a result of the fact that I was siezed by a story this week and I had to get it written before it got away from me.

I really want a break. I want to take a day and go do something with no kids. The first window of opportunity for that will be in two weeks after Howard has finished his pre-world-con crunch and has recovered from his post world-con crash. Also my parents are going to come and visit then. I’ll bet I can get them to babysit while I run off for a day. Grandparents like to do that kind of thing.

  1. Have you considered a cat for the mice problem?

That is an amazing mess… even Emily has never quite pulled off one like that (at my house).

You are lucky to have people that will give you a day off!

  3. I have had messes like that one TOO many times! My youngest seems to enjoy life more when things are spread all over the floor and mixed up…I’m trying to at least contain it to her bedroom, but some days it spreads across the entire house. It’s exhausting. On the other hand she is quite creative and I hope to channel that into something positive!

When she makes a spectacular mess I run for the camera so I’ll have evidence when she is older! I have quite a collection of those pictures, unfortunately!

Good luck getting a day off. It can work wonders.

I’m interested in the story you wrote this week….what is it about?

  5. Unfortunately both Link and I have serious cat allergies. Living with a cat would be worse than living with skittering mice. It is unfortunate because cats make much better pets.

Indeed I am lucky. I just have to be patient enough to make it to my rare days off.

  7. For perspective on messes…

Last week when I truly cleaned my room…

a dozen bags of trash, and one VERY full garbage bin…

Give that a moment to soak in…

You kids don’t seem so bad now, do they?

  9. Good to hear “it got bettah..”
I need a break too. It’s been two weeks since my birthday and I still haven’t had a chance to lesuirely walk around in a store and decide how to spend my birthday money. I suspect that if I don’t reserve a day on my calendar, I won’t get to for another two weeks.
Getting ready for the State Fair. Crocheting a couple of bags to put Pokeman cards in for my kids’ friend’s b-day coming up. Reading “putting-the-joy-back-into-christmas” type books to make a report on for an upcoming Enrichment Night. Preparing for a Cub Scout pack meeting.
We are going down to my parents house in St. George, but, it won’t be relaxing…there will be 20 family members (baby blessing)and a rare chance to talk to my brothers…and if I’m lucky, SWIMMING! no skipping
    out for me.

As for messes. Imagine a messy little girl room, as I cleaned it up (and got rid of THREE boxes of stuff/toys) I found Jelly Beans leftover from Easter, scattered throughout the mess. Stuck to clothes…etc. I also found and “Experiment” – an empty vitamin bottle (I remember her asking to play with it.) full of bits of bread and jelly beans and some water that was growing some black mold! ew! I also found bits of ancient bread bits and crumbs. no wonder we have ants! Also, there is the prerequisite writing on the wall, and I shouldn’t have been suprised at finding Barbies with marker makeup jobs… but, I was… especially because one of those “barbies” is a really nice doll from Switzerland with breakable head, arms and legs. yikes!
