I collected my second troll

This morning I checked comments on yesterday’s rambling entry and was informed that I am boring. I deleted the actual comment because it contained profanity. Naturally it was anonymous. I am left to wonder, if I am so boring, why was it worth this person’s time to inform me how boring I am? What did the person hope to accomplish? The answer I’m afraid is that the person is grouchy about something entirely different and is spewing the bile everywhere. The troll’s boredom is not my fault.

The first time my journal was trolled was on my fifth entry. It was emotionally devastating. This time I am able to shrug and delete the comment while wondering idly at the motivations of someone who wanders through and randomly throws stones. The troll was right, that particular entry was fairly boring. I wrote it not to entertain others, but to record for myself and to tell Howard (who is away at a convention) how my day went. Many of my entries are similarly boring to others. But then that is part of livejournal and blogging in general. Not every entry can be brilliant or entertaining.

  1. If it helps any, while it was perhaps not top-selling-thriller material (For one, it lacked any crazy conspiracy theories about Da Vinci, the Virgin Mary, and a unicycle), said post was entirely readable – indeed, pleasant to read. Truly boring acheives neither of those… and it’s good it’s not bothering you. 🙂

  3. It amuses me that some people assume that the whole Internet exists only to entertain them. And sometimes it amuses me to remind them that no one forces them to come to my sites and I’m not getting a dime from their readership. Then I welcome them to the real world.

I’m not saying you should do that. Experience has shown that it is usually best to ignore these people. Though, I’ve never gotten a reply back from a troll to the fact that they aren’t paying me to entertain them. I mean, if they were actually to send me some money, I might actually feel incline to humor them a little.

  5. said something a while ago that still rings true about internet trolls. Namely: they’l only spend 30 seconds to a minute trying to trash your work, so if you give them more attention (specifically, being upset/annoyed/whatever) than that in return, they win. Sounds like you came out ahead this time, though.

  7. I think your journal is more interesting than you realize. While I hardly ever comment I can’t think of a single entry that I thought was a waste of my time.

Or to put things a little differently, you have your head on straighter than most of livejournal, myself included.

  9. Every entry you make, you allow us to read, that means it’s a privilege to read your journal. And yes, comment if we so feel like it. I don’t comment often, but know this…I am never bored. I wish I could have met with you and Howard when you were here for Emerald City. I couldn’t get transportation up there. /pout One day I WILL get to meet the woman that keeps one of my all time favorite artist authors sane as well as to get to shake his hand and say thank you in person. I know what a job it is to raise children, I’ve three myself. That means, not every day is scintillating with brilliant comments. Same stuff, different day is the usual for a parent. The trolls that leave anonymous entries are only trying to make themselves feel better about themselves by disrespecting someone that a lot of others look up to or admire. They fail, yet they haven’t figured this out. Trolls belong in games, not in journals. I’m glad they don’t bother you any more. Period. They shouldn’t. I just figure them for poor individuals with no life, no true self worth. And then ignore them. Delete buttons are great. /smile
Thank you for sharing your life, your children and your husband with us poor sots. /grin

Honestly, I’ve a lil cheered when I see Sandra has a new post. I love reading them.

  13. This is your journal, you have a right to be boring if you want to. 😉

I’ve always enjoyed reading your entries.

  15. I hopped on this morning and saw it before you did. I almost said something to this same effect, but figured it wasn’t worth my time and it would only encourage the beast.
It must be troll day. Today we got a rude and trolly email through my website as well.

  17. That was my question, and what I do: my default (which I only change for very specific reasons) is that anonymous comments will not be allowed, on any post, public, friends-only, or filtered. Saves me times later.

  19. If I am going to allow anonymous posting at all, I see no point in screening them when I can delete. Screening does nothing to protect me from recieving hurtful comments. I still have to read them.

  21. For a long time after the first troll I did not allow any anonymous replies. I changed that last November when I realized that there are many people who do not have livejournal accounts who enjoy being able to comment in response to my entries.

Since turning on anonymous posting I have recieved numerous insightful, funny, helpful anonymous comments and only one troll. If that balance were to shift in the other direction, I’d probably turn off anonymous posting.

  23. I like that you take a common-sensical approach, for example weighing the thousands of South Korean students who come to this country to go to college, succeed, and either return to Korea or settle here, as opposed to the only one who went on a brutal rampage, as your guideline for what you should make policy.

  25. Your entries are never boring.
I grew accustomed to open your journal almost every day, and I am grateful for every entry you write 🙂
