Patches fourth birthday party was today. We had a jungle safari theme because sometime last year I picked up a How to Host a Kid’s Party kit at a thrift store for a dollar. This kit was great. It came with all the activities and prizes for the whole party. We adventured through the house looking for clues and playing jungle games. Then raisinfish made balloon swords for everyone and there was joyful chaos.
This evening Patches was climbing into bed and hugging his new stuffed Charmander. He found one of the pawprints we’d used as part of the activites. He instructed me to stick it to his dresser so that he would always have it. Then he told me that he’d liked the game and he wants to play it again for his next birthday. He also wants to have another Charmander and a Cookie Monster cake just like this time. In short, he thought this birthday was so perfect he wants to do it all again.
Then he snuggled up and fell asleep cuddling Charmander.
wow. Excellent. I must have had a much different temperment than Patches. When I was a kid (when I was … I still do) I was much more laid back. I remember one year my cousin’s friend Kathy took over the planning of a birthday party.
I don’t remember what was done, but there was a lot of activities, and I hated it. Even much later, (ie. my wedding day), I enjoyed a much more laid back atmosphere.
I still do. To me, a party consists of a group of no more than 8 people who want to talk, joke, and laugh. Usually, over some beers or wine or something. (not that I was drinking at Patches age, just that I was sedate. :P)
Blah. 🙂 I’m glad it worked out. Nice birthday’s are one of the sublime pleasures of life.

Speaking of swords… a discovery by a friend of mine: lengths of plastic-foam pipe insulation from the DIY store make super swords for such occasions. The kind that fit pipe around 1/2″ or 3/4″ diameter and are about 1.1/2″ outside diameter are good. Unless you’re really violent they last quite well and it’s quite hard to really hurt anyone with them.

The party was actually quite small. Only three guests. All the games were modified and shortened to the attention spans of 4 year olds. And the last third of the party were devoted to Looney Tunes on DVD.
Patches doesn’t much like crowds either, but the three guests were his very favorite people, so he was okay.

Doing the same birthday party all over again sounds GREAT! The DAY after his birthday, LightningBoy starts planning his next birthday party.
I think I must’ve heard 50 different ideas for his birthday already and it’s not for 7 more months!
If only he could stick with one idea we could flesh it out and I could watch for sales and bargains and really make it cool.
On the other hand he’s had some ideas that when he changed ideas I breathed a BIG sigh of relief! Whew! I don’t have to make a Transformers cake that really changes from a car into a robot!!! 🙂
